Traditional Certification Exams

If you completed training before June 30, 2016, you'll take the Part 1 & Part 2 Exams to become certified in anesthesiology.

Candidates who complete residency training on or after Jan. 1, 2012, must satisfy all requirements for certification within seven years of the last day of the year in which residency training was completed. Candidates who completed residency training prior to Jan. 1, 2012, had until Dec. 31, 2018, to complete requirements.

Part 1 Exam

The Part 1 Exam focuses on clinical aspects of anesthetic practice and emphasizes subspecialty-based practice and advanced clinical issues.

You’ll take this exam after you complete your residency training. We’ll assign you an exam date after you register and can only change your assignment for religious observance, military commitments and medical accommodations.

Part 2 Exam

The Part 2 Exam (SOE) is based on guided questions that include a patient’s brief clinical history and emphasize the scientific rationale underlying clinical management decisions. You will participate in two 35-minute sessions that assess your judgement, adaptability to unexpected clinical changes, organization and presentation of information. We offer the Part 2 Exam (SOE) nine weeks each year at our Assessment Center in Raleigh, N.C.

You can register for the Part 2 Exam as soon as you pass the Part 1 Exam. Exam weeks are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. The registration fee is $2,400. Two months prior to the exam week, we’ll email you your specific exam date and time.
